San Juan, Puerto Rico
Like many of you, I had travel plans in 2020 that were abruptly canceled. So once it was safe to hit the road again, I was more than ready to take those flight credits and turn them into something meaningful. I wanted a trip that blended adventure, culture, and affordability—and Puerto Rico checked every box.
I’ve always believed that travel should be both intentional and fun. This wasn’t about splurging—it was about making the most of what I had, and doing it with curiosity and heart. With those unused flight credits from 2020, I flew to San Juan practically for free, and from there, the real adventure began.
Finding the Perfect Stay
I ended up booking a perfectly located rooftop hostel with private rooms, ocean views, and a vibrant community of travelers. It wasn’t five-star, but it didn’t need to be. The place was clean, comfortable, and had exactly the kind of energy I love—laid back, yet full of potential for spontaneous conversations and unforgettable sunsets.
Food First, Always
If you know me, you know food is one of my favorite ways to experience a new place—and Puerto Rico did not disappoint. I went all in: mofongo, empanadillas, tostones, arroz con habichuela, and a seafood paella that deserves its own blog post. Honestly, some meals didn’t make it to the camera roll because I couldn’t wait to dig in.
Every bite felt like a celebration. Local eateries, roadside stands, casual cafés—no matter where I stopped, the flavor was unmatched. I followed music, trusted recommendations from locals, and let my appetite guide the itinerary.
A Place for the Adventurer
Of course, the island is more than just a food paradise. It’s rich in culture and natural beauty. I explored the colorful streets of Viejo San Juan, wandered through the historic Cementerio Santa María Magdalena de Pazzi in La Perla, and hiked deep into El Yunque Rainforest until I found myself standing beneath a waterfall, cooled by mist and surrounded by green.
One of my favorite moments was discovering a hidden beach thanks to a tip from some friends I met along the way. No signs, no tourists—just clear blue water and quiet waves. That’s the magic of travel: the unexpected joys that don’t show up on any map.
And if you're into history and architecture like I am, the three Castillos in Old San Juan are a must. They offer sweeping views of the ocean and a deep dive into the island’s complex past.
The Real Takeaway
Puerto Rico reminded me that you don’t need a huge budget to create lasting memories. It’s a destination full of romance, rhythm, and resilience—and it’s ideal for couples or solo travelers looking to reconnect with the world in a thoughtful, adventurous way.
